You’re Not Done: Why Your Next Ten Years Matter More Than Your Last Ten

You’re Not Done: Why Your Next Ten Years Matter More Than Your Last Ten

I hear it in the counselling room more often than you might think. A person sits down, looks at me, and says something like, “Jeff, I’m past it now. My best years are behind me.”I do not believe that. Not for a minute.Your past matters. It shaped you. It taught you things no classroom could teach. But your past is not your finish line. What you have lived through — the hard years, the good years, the years you would do differently if you could — is not the end of your story. It is the ground your next chapter grows out of.A later chapter is not a smaller chapterThere is a quiet idea in our culture that life gets smaller as we get older. Fewer plans. Fewer dreams. Settle in, slow down, and stop expecting much.I have spent more than forty years sitting with people, and that is not what I have seen. I have seen people in their fifties, sixties, and seventies make changes they had put off for decades. I have seen people pick up a talent they had buried, repair a relationship they thought was finished, and start work that mattered to them more than anything they had done before.A later chapter is different, yes. It is often quieter. It is often wiser. But it does not have to be smaller. Sometimes, freed from the pressures of earlier years, a person can finally ask the question that matters most: what do I actually want the next ten years to be about?Dream. Plan. Act. Progress. That question is where the work starts, and it is simpler than people expect:1. Dream. Let yourself name what you actually want — not what you think you should want, and not what someone else wanted for you. A dream you will not name stays a wish.2. Plan. Turn the dream into plain words and a first step. Not the whole road. Just the next step, and a time to take it.3. Act. Take that step, even if it is small. A small step taken beats a big plan postponed.4. Progress. Notice that you moved. Progress is not perfection. Progress is movement in the direction you chose, one step at a time. You do not need to have the whole ten years figured out before you begin. You need a dream worth naming, a plan with a first step, and the willingness to act on it today. What if you do not know what you want yet? That is more common than you think, and it is nothing to be ashamed of. Many people arrive at this stage of life having spent years looking after everyone else — family, work, community — and they have never really been asked what they want for themselves. If that is you, start smaller. Ask yourself: what gave me life when I was younger? What do I miss? Who do I want to spend more time with? What talent of mine has been sitting unused? You do not need a grand answer. A small, honest answer is enough to begin with. And you do not have to figure it out alone. That is part of what counselling is for: a place to talk it through, out loud, with someone who will listen and help you sort out what matters to you now.Your next ten years start todaySo here is my question for you, the same one I ask in the counselling room: what is one thing you would like to be different ten years from now? And what is one small step you could take toward it this week? You are not done. You are not finished. Your story is still being written — and the next chapter could be the one that matters most.Dream again. Live with purpose. This post is general information and encouragement only.
