Talk It Through

Talk It Through

Some thoughts only get clearer when we say them out loud. Inside our own heads, a worry can go around and around. It picks up speed. It mixes with yesterday’s worry and tomorrow’s worry, until it is hard to tell what we are actually dealing with anymore. We can feel stuck, even when we are working hard at thinking our way out of it. Talking it through does something different. It slows the thought down. It puts it into words, one sentence at a time. And once it is in words, we can look at it. We can ask: is that really what I mean? Is that the whole story? What part of this can I do something about today? That is a big part of what counselling is, in my work. It is not someone telling you what to think, or handing you a ready-made answer. It is a conversation — a place to talk honestly, to sort through what is going on, and to find the next honest step, whatever that step is for you. Sometimes that conversation is about personal life. Sometimes it is about work and career — where you have been, what you are good at, and what you want your next ten years to look like. Sometimes it is about family, or about the weight you have been carrying quietly for a long time. Whatever it is, you do not have to have it all figured out before you start talking. In fact, that is often the best time to start. You also do not have to face it alone. Many people try to carry everything by themselves, because they do not want to be a burden, or because they think they should be able to sort it out on their own. Asking for a conversation is not weakness. It is a practical step. It is how we get a clearer view of our own lives — with another person listening, asking good questions, and helping us hear what we are really saying. So here is a small invitation for this week: if something has been going around in your head, try saying it out loud. You can write it down first, if that helps. You can say it to someone you trust. And if you would like a counsellor to talk it through with, Framework Counselling is here — in Timmins, and by video across Ontario. You do not need the perfect words. You do not need a finished plan. You just need a first conversation, and the willingness to be honest in it. Dream again. Live with purpose. And take the next honest step. — Jeffrey Baldock, Framework Counselling
